Services

What can I offer?

Eventually I plan to offer other editorial services, such as copyediting and proofreading, but at this time my specialty service is manuscript critiquing.

A manuscript critique is an analysis of the essential storytelling elements, such as theme, plot, character, pace, and style. The analysis is presented in a 10- to 20-page editorial report that discusses the manuscript’s strengths and weaknesses.

This type of editing does not include changing the manuscript itself—meaning I won’t be rewriting or rearranging portions—nor does it address grammar or mechanics—e.g. spelling, punctuation, sentence structure.

"Danielle did an amazing job! She came up with some incredible, thoughtful suggestions to improve my manuscript. She was prompt, easy to communicate with, and all around a pleasure to work with. A five-star editing job!"

Assessing the narrative

––Have you read your words over and over to the point that you’re somewhat desensitized? You need a fresh perspective from the viewpoint of an analytical reader. I can provide that.

As a developmental editor conducting a critique, I identify any big-picture storytelling issues within the narrative, explain how they may be problematic, and suggest solutions. Examples of such issues are:

  • inconsistent characterization or chronology
  • irrelevant or unresolved subplots
  • lack of tension and unbalanced structure
  • switching POV often and without warning
  • too much narrative summary
  • a rushed or unsatisfying resolution

I’ll also pay close attention to any specific concerns you might have: Is the heroine annoying, or the hero domineering? Is the premise compelling? Is the setting described well enough? Is the writing style fluid and engaging, or dry and boring?

My niche ~ romance

I adore romance novels. Historical, contemporary, paranormal, fantasy, suspense, small town, sports—name the subgenre, I’ve read it. I also enjoy stories that incorporate strong romantic elements, even if the central plots are mystery (e.g., Simone St. James, Darynda Jones), thriller (e.g., Karen Rose, Sandra Brown), or mainstream (e.g., Sophie Kinsella, Susan Elizabeth Phillips).

By working with the genres I enjoy reading—knowing the tropes, trends, and conventions of the genre—I can provide feedback that’s more detailed, relevant, and insightful.

“Brilliant, knowledgeable, thorough, passionate, reliable: Danielle is the editor I was dreaming of! She gave me the perfect mix of tough love, humor, and professionalism to transform my manuscript in the best story it could be!”

Policies

Format: I require your manuscript to be a Microsoft Word document, either .doc or .docx. (If you don’t use Word, most word processors will allow you to save a copy as or convert to .docx.) My editorial report will be presented to you as a .pdf file.

I would also appreciate if you could format your manuscript to industry standards. It’s not strictly necessary for a critique, but the manuscript will most likely need to be formatted to industry standards eventually, so why not now? If you need help, you can find my guidelines here and here. At the very least, I need it in an easy-to-read font (Times New Roman, Calibri, Arial, Courier New, the like) at a reasonable size (12 or 14) with numbered chapters and page breaks between chapters.

Payment: You’ll be invoiced for 50% of your total fee once we’ve settled on terms and signed a contract. This retaining deposit is due upon receipt and reserves your place in my schedule. If it is not paid, your place in my schedule may be filled by another project, and your time slot will need to be renegotiated. I will not begin work on your project until the retaining deposit has been paid. The remaining 50% is due within 14 days of receiving my report and second invoice.

Payments must be made through PayPal. I do not accept cash, checks, or money orders.

Additional work: Your total fee covers one project as well as 14 days of follow-up correspondence, meaning any questions or concerns you may have regarding my work after reading my report. If after you’ve revised the manuscript you would like me to conduct another critique, it will be treated and billed as a separate project.

I will not work with:

  • horror
  • hard science fiction
  • high fantasy
  • erotica (not to be confused with erotic romance)
  • screenplays
  • poetry
  • comics or graphic novels
  • non-fiction (memoirs, biographies, self-help, textbooks, journalism articles, technical writing, manuals, etc.)
  • speeches or essays
